IU Involvement:
I am a member of College Mentors for Kids. A current employee of FASE Mentoring Services and 21st Century Scholars.
Favorite thing about IU:
I love the beautiful campus of IU. If I am ever stressed, upset, or angry the moment I take a walk around the campus I am so much happier. There is always something to do on the campus and it is never a boring day. I always look forward to the next day.
Advice to new students:
My advice is to enjoy your freshmen year. Do not get forget to enjoy your “firsts”. We have four years on the campus and by late sophomore year into junior year many of your major classes get harder. So enjoy the small moments of life. Explore places on the campus. There are so many places that are small and not so popular, but are worth your time. Enjoy the gen-ed classes and choose them to be something of your liking.
How do you respond to setbacks? Any tips for being resilient.
I tend to remove myself from the situation. I go take a walk and watch the scenery around me. This normally helps me relax and gain a fresh sense of mind. Then once I have calmed down and have a fresh mind I try to tackle the problem. I seek advice from the professionals, from mentors, from professors and from others when needed. Use the setback to motivate yourself and improve yourself. Get help when you need it and don’t be afraid.
What are your goals/career hopes?
I want to be a family physician. This has been my dream career for such a long time. Once I begin to soar in my career, I hope to create a scholarship to help others in college and medical school to ease the pain of upcoming students.
How has the 21st century scholars program helped you succeed?
The 21st Century Scholars Program had provided me with a lot of resources, advisors, and mentors. I have never felt that I won’t make it through college. I always had an advisor from the program emailing me updates, reminders, and helping me navigate IU. Through this program, I gained a mentor that provided a student perspective of IU and helped me understand the pathways to my career and education. This program has really made going to college a dream come true with its scholarship and with the resources.
